George B. Kirya is a Ugandan physician, academic, microbiologist, politician and diplomat. He is the current Chairman of the Uganda Health Services Commission.[1] He has served in that capacity since 2007.

He was born in Pallisa District.[2]
George Kirya was educated at Makerere University School of Medicine, where he graduated with the degree of Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB). He later proceeded to the United Kingdom where he obtained the Master of Science (MSc), specializing in Microbiology. His doctorate in microbiology and virology was obtained from Makerere University School of Medicine.
During the early 1970s, Dr. Kirya served as the Medical Director of the East African Virus Research Institute (EAVRI), a department of the East African Community.[3] In the mid-1970s, he moved to Makerere University School of Medicine, as Professor and Head of Department, in the Department of Microbiology. In the 1980s, he served as Vice Chancellor of Makerere University. During the 1990s, he was appointed Uganda's High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, based in London, serving in that position until the early 2000s.[4] He returned to Uganda in 2005 and was appointed Chairman of the Uganda Health Services Commission in 2007.
Professor Kirya is married and is the father of several adult children.
